Grinding wheels on bakelite bond - bakelite bond (B, B1, B2, etc.) is Bakelite resin in the form of powder and Bakelite varnish. Abrasive wheels on such a bond have quite high strength and elasticity, which allows them to be made very thin (up to 0.5 mm) for cutting and slotting work.
The disadvantage of the bakelite bond is its low resistance to the action of cooling liquids containing alkaline solutions, so grinding is done dry. But if coolants cannot be dispensed with, to reduce their harmful effects, the circles are covered with waterproof paint or varnish. In addition, the tool on the bakelite bond does not have a high heat capacity, as a result of which the bond burns out at a temperature of 250...300°C, and the abrasive grains are colored.
For the manufacture of an abrasive tool on a bakelite bond, normal electrocorundum (14A - for metal work) and black silicon carbide (54С - for stone work) are used. To increase the stability of the circles, a filler - cryolite - is added.
A bakelite bond has a weaker bond with the grain than a ceramic one, so bakelite wheels are widely used in flat grinding operations where self-sharpening of the wheel is required.
Wheels on a bakelite bond are used for rough processing of metal and steel, stripping work performed manually and on hanging machines, flat grinding with the end of the wheel, high-speed and power grinding, sharpening of cutting tools, grinding of discontinuous surfaces.
